When analyzing how humans interact with Artificial Intelligence, we can divide users into two fundamental categories based on Martin Heidegger’s philosophy: The Category of the Present-at-Hand (Vorhandenheit) and The Category of the Ready-at-Hand (Zuhandenheit).

The following story illustrates how these categories cleanly separate the unsuccessful users from the truly successful ones.

The Tale of Two Craftsmen: Vikram and Leo
In the high-tech industrial hub of Pune, an advanced AI engine named The Architect was deployed to design optimal engine components for an automotive manufacturing plant. The Architect was an ingestion engine capable of processing trillions of kinematic equations, generative flows, and supply-chain constraints. Two systems engineers, Vikram and Leo, were tasked with using this tool to solve a critical engineering bottleneck.

Category I: The Unsuccessful User – Trapped in the Present-at-Hand
Vikram approached the AI as a detached spectator staring at an external object. To Vikram, the AI fell squarely into the category of the Present-at-Hand (Vorhandenheit)—it was a collection of algorithms, neural weights, and data outputs to be observed, scrutinized, and treated as a static repository of absolute facts.

Whenever the plant faced a localized disruption, Vikram would input queries and passively accept whatever the AI’s dashboard generated. He viewed the machine as a “Single Source of Truth,” treating its mathematical outputs as a supreme authority. Because he treated the AI as an independent ontic object, he fell into the passive stupor of what Heidegger called Das Man (the “they”). Vikram stopped exercising his own critical human judgment; he blindly clicked “Approve” on automated prompts, mistaking the pristine, engineered mechanics of the machine’s “Map” for the messy, unquantifiable truth of the physical factory floor—the “Territory”.

When the underlying physical constraints of the plant shifted unexpectedly, Vikram’s rigid reliance on the present-at-hand tool left him paralyzed. The AI gave optimized data based on historical models, but because Vikram had outsourced his existential accountability to the machine, he could not adapt. He was an unsuccessful user because the tool remained a heavy, opaque obstacle in his awareness—a technical master ruling over a passive subject.

Category II: The Successful User – Executing the Ready-at-Hand
Leo approached the exact same AI engine through an entirely different ontological category. For Leo, the tool belonged to the category of the Ready-at-Hand (Zuhandenheit). He did not view the AI as a distinct, external object of contemplation; rather, he absorbed it into his active, embodied engagement with the world.

Like Heidegger’s famous example of the hammer used by a skilled carpenter, the AI became transparent in Leo’s hands. Leo did not stare at the AI; he looked through it toward the ultimate engineering goal. He treated the AI’s continuous generative reasoning as a fluid stream of advice (Becoming), but recognized that the ultimate responsibility for transaction and action (Being) belonged strictly to him as a human agent (Dasein).

When the plant experienced a supply shock, Leo did not passively bow to the dashboard. He used the AI’s computations as an extension of his own capabilities, injecting localized human intuition to query what the dashboard omitted. Because the tool was ready-at-hand, it withdrew from his conscious focus, allowing his mind to retain the meaning of the Territory while letting the machine run the math of the Map. Leo was a highly successful user because he maintained his cognitive agency, using the technology not as an oppressive framework of control, but as a seamless vehicle for ethical, effective action in the world.

Conclusion: The Purity of the Taxonomy
By classifying AI usage into these two distinct philosophical categories, our understanding of technological capability achieves total clarity:

The Unsuccessful User (Vorhandenheit) treats AI as an autonomous object of calculation, relinquishing human agency to the machine’s parameters and falling into unreflective conformity (Das Man).

The Successful User (Zuhandenheit) masterfully integrates the AI into their practical workflow, keeping the tool ontologically transparent while preserving the vital human responsibility of interpreting reality and taking decisive action.
