In reality, they could be standing on an isolated ridge, completely oblivious to a massive canyon separating them from the true peak. Popper’s point is that while the summit (Objective Truth) exists as a concrete, unchanging reality, our human apparatus lacks a built-in “success meter” to verify when our perception matches it perfectly. We are permanently denied an absolute, unmediated confirmation of our own accuracy.

To understand how progress occurs through the reduction of error rather than the accumulation of proof, we can look at a real-world revolution in marine navigation: the tracking of the Atlantic “Ghost Fleet” during the mid-20th century.
For decades, oceanographers and military vessels traveling the deep Atlantic encountered a bizarre phenomenon on their sonar screens: a solid ocean floor that appeared to sit only 1,000 to 1,500 feet below the surface.
